Prayer and celebration mark Christmas in Visakhapatnam
Christmas Day in Visakhapatnam was marked by a blend of early-morning church services and lively activity in public spaces, reflecting the city’s mix of religious observance and community celebration.
Churches across the city were illuminated with festive decorations as congregations gathered for special prayers and sermons focusing on compassion, forgiveness and care for the underprivileged. Despite the chilly weather, attendance remained steady, with carol singing adding warmth to the celebrations.
“Christmas reminds us that faith must be reflected in our actions, especially in how we care for the poor and the vulnerable,” a priest said during the service at St. Anthony Church, Waltair Main Road. “It is a day to renew our commitment to kindness and forgiveness.”
Civic participation was visible at several locations. At a Christmas programme in Pendurthi, the Mayor joined prayers and celebrations and stressed the social message of the festival. “This is a time to do good and stand with those in need. The spirit of Christmas lies in sharing and service,” the Mayor said while addressing the gathering.
In central Visakhapatnam, St. Anthony Church in Jagadamba saw a steady flow of devotees through the day. Its location in a busy commercial area underlined how Christmas observances in the city are closely interwoven with every day public life. “We come here every year before stepping out with family,” said a local resident. “Prayer comes first, and then we celebrate together.”
Festive activity was also evident in markets and bakeries, particularly in the days leading up to Christmas. Demand rose for decorations, gifts and traditional plum and fruit cakes across Visakhapatnam and nearby North Andhra districts. “Orders for cakes have been strong this year, especially from families and offices,” a bakery owner said.
By evening, the city’s seafront became a major gathering point. Beach Road and the RK Beach stretch saw large crowds, with social media posts indicating Christmas programmes and celebrations near the Novotel area. Though not part of official civic announcements, the gatherings reflected strong public interest. “RK Beach feels like the city’s meeting point during festivals,” said a visitor. “Everyone comes out after prayers.”
Hotels and venues hosted Christmas Eve and Christmas Day events, including ticketed programmes combining dining and entertainment. For many residents, the festival moved from church services to evening outings, capturing the shared rhythm of Christmas in Visakhapatnam.
