Visakhapatnam Rings in New Year Amid Tight Security
Visakhapatnam rang in the New Year with high energy as large crowds gathered across the city on Wednesday night. Beach Road emerged as the main hub of celebrations, drawing thousands of revellers and visitors.
Police imposed traffic restrictions to manage the rush. They closed the stretch between The Park Hotel Junction and the NTR Statue to vehicles from 8 pm. Authorities also restricted the middle lane of the BRTS Road at Hanumanthawaka–Adavivaram, Pendurthi to Convent Junction, and Maddilapalem to Rama Talkies. “These measures were necessary to ensure smooth movement and public safety,” a senior police official said.
Hotels and private venues hosted several New Year programmes, attracting large turnouts and adding to the festive mood. Beach Road remained lively as people drove along the coastline and groups of friends gathered to welcome the New Year. “There was a celebratory vibe everywhere, especially along the beachfront,” said a resident.
Police deployed teams along Beach Road and at major junctions to regulate crowds. Bakeries and sweet shops reported a heavy rush, with long queues for cakes. Temporary stalls and kiosks came up across the city, selling biryanis, cakes, and flower bouquets. Liquor outlets and bars also saw heavy footfall. “We conducted drunken driving checks at multiple locations to prevent accidents,” the official added, noting that safety remained the top priority through the night.
