Awareness drive on waste segregation held at Adarsh Nagar slum
As part of Swachh Survekshan 2025–26, an awareness programme on solid waste management was organised at Adarsh Nagar slum in Ward No. 17, focusing on source segregation of waste and household-level composting.
Residents took part in the programme, during which officials and sanitation workers demonstrated methods for segregating wet and dry waste at the household level. They also explained simple techniques for converting kitchen waste into compost. The sessions highlighted the need to reduce mixed waste and ease the pressure on landfills.
“Source segregation at the household level is essential for effective waste management. Proper segregation enables recycling and composting and helps reduce the load on dumping yards,” an official associated with the programme said.
Residents were urged to practise waste segregation on a daily basis and to encourage others in the neighbourhood to follow suit. Officials said sustained community participation was crucial to achieving long-term results.
Another official said behavioural change at the grassroots level was key to meeting the objectives of Swachh Survekshan. “Clean cities cannot be achieved through infrastructure alone. Citizen participation plays an equally important role,” the official said.
Officials said similar awareness programmes would be organised in other wards in the coming weeks as part of efforts to improve sanitation and promote environmentally responsible practices across Visakhapatnam.
