Delay in mosquito net supply raises malaria concerns in Agency areas
The distribution of mosquito nets in the Agency areas of the district remains uncertain as the epidemic season approaches, raising concerns over malaria prevention in tribal villages.
Mosquito nets were earlier supplied once every four years as part of malaria control measures. However, no distribution has taken place for nearly six years. The last supply was made in 2020–21, when the district was undivided. Since then, tribal villages have not received fresh mosquito nets.
Health officials say malaria cases are reported from high-risk villages every epidemic season. In the Sitampeta Agency area, Indoor Residual Spraying and Anti-Larva Operations were conducted in 159 tribal villages that recorded higher malaria and dengue cases during 2024–25. Despite these steps, malaria cases were reported last season, mainly in villages under the Donubai, Kusimi and Marripadu Primary Health Centre limits.
Across the district, about 245 villages in 15 mandals have been identified as malaria high-risk areas. Officials estimate that 3.5 lakh mosquito nets are required. Proposals have been sent to the Central and State governments, and supplies are expected to reach the district soon.
Meanwhile, the State government is preparing to distribute 63,000 mosquito nets in the first phase, ahead of the epidemic season. The nets will be distributed in selected high-risk villages using State funds.
Officials have also flagged poor awareness among tribal communities on the proper use of mosquito nets. Some nets distributed earlier were reportedly used for other purposes. Health authorities said awareness programmes and support from village panchayats are needed to ensure effective use.
District Medical Officer Mani said proposals had been submitted for mosquito net distribution this year. He said the State government has initiated steps to supply 63,000 nets before the epidemic season, while the total requirement stands at about 3.5 lakh.
