Waltair Division marks Partition Horrors Remembrance Day with exhibition

The Waltair Division of Indian Railways solemnly observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Wednesday by organising a special exhibition at Gate No.1 of Visakhapatnam Railway Station. The initiative sought to create awareness among the public about the immense suffering and displacement endured by millions during the Partition of India in 1947.

The exhibition, inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra, showcased a series of rare and evocative photographs that captured the ordeal of families uprooted from their homes. The images highlighted the scale of migration, the grief of separation, and the resilience of those who struggled to rebuild their lives amid one of the most tragic chapters in the subcontinent’s history.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Bohra paid homage to the martyrs and victims of Partition. He said the observance was not only an act of remembrance but also a collective responsibility to acknowledge the sacrifices that laid the foundation of independent India. “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is an emotional reminder of the tragedy and sacrifices millions made prior to our country’s independence. It is vital for every citizen to acknowledge and remember the historical suffering, so its lessons are never forgotten,” he remarked.

Senior branch officers of the Division were present and took part in the programme. The arrangements and activities of the exhibition were coordinated by Senior Divisional Personnel Officer Jusuf Kabir Ansari.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed across the country every year on August 14, the eve of Independence Day, to recall the human cost of the division of the nation. The Partition, which accompanied the birth of India and Pakistan, led to the displacement of nearly 20 million people and claimed countless lives in communal violence, making it one of the largest and most painful migrations in human history.

Through such exhibitions, Indian Railways seeks to remind citizens, especially younger generations, of the magnitude of the tragedy and the importance of unity, tolerance, and peace in safeguarding the hard-won freedom of the nation.
