Narayana Backs Amaravati, Flags Gaps on AP Promises

CPI National Control Commission Chairman K. Narayana on Thursday reiterated that Amaravati is the rightful capital of Andhra Pradesh, stating that it reflects the long-standing aspirations of the people and the historical demand of the region.

In a statement, Mr. Narayana said the proposal to recognise Amaravati as the capital had already received the approval of Parliament, giving it both legal and political legitimacy. He recalled that the demand for a capital in the Vijayawada region dates back to 1952, when the CPI first advocated it after the State’s separation from the erstwhile Madras Presidency.

Criticising Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSRCP, he alleged that the three-capital proposal weakened Amaravati and created uncertainty among the public, which, he said, contributed to the party’s political setbacks. He also faulted YSRCP members for boycotting Parliament during the introduction of the Amaravati Bill and for remaining absent in the State Assembly at the time of its passage.

At the same time, Mr. Narayana said the ruling dispensation had not done enough on key issues concerning the State. He pointed out that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the Telugu Desam Party should have simultaneously mounted stronger pressure on the Centre for Special Category Status and ensured the full implementation of assurances given under the A.P. Reorganisation Act.

Emphasising the need for a comprehensive approach, he said the State’s development should not be limited to the capital issue alone, and called for sustained efforts to address pending commitments and ensure balanced growth across all regions of Andhra Pradesh.
