AP to deploy 750 e-buses in 11 cities within three months

The Andhra Pradesh government is set to roll out 750 electric buses across 11 cities within the next three months, with the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) accelerating infrastructure works under the Centre’s PM e-Bus Sewa scheme.

APSRTC Executive Director (Operations) A. Appala Raju said the required electrical and civil works were underway at 12 depots to establish EV charging facilities, enabling the phased induction of the fleet.

Under the allocation plan, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, and Nellore will receive 100 buses each, while Kakinada, Rajamahendravaram, Amaravati, Kadapa, Tirupati, Kurnool, and Anantapur have been allotted 50 buses each.

Charging infrastructure is being developed proportionately, with one charger planned for every five buses at depots in and around the identified cities.

An electric bus requires about four hours for a full charge and can travel between 180 km and 200 km. As part of the operational protocol, drivers have been instructed to return to depots after covering 170 km to avoid mid-route depletion.

APSRTC is adopting both slow- and fast-charging systems. While slow charging is time-intensive, it is considered optimal for battery longevity and will be used for routine operations. Fast charging can power buses for up to 110 km in about 45 minutes, but its frequent use may affect battery life.

The Centre is bearing the full cost of electrical infrastructure, including high-tension lines and chargers. For civil works, it will fund 60% of the expenditure, with the State covering the balance.

The initiative is part of a broader push to promote electric mobility in public transport.
