Operation Jyothirgamayee Rehabilitates Ex-Convicts

In an effort to help former convicts rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society, the city police have launched a rehabilitation drive under Operation Jyothirgamayee, providing employment opportunities and livelihood support to those who have completed their jail terms.

Police said the initiative was aimed at preventing repeat offences by addressing one of the key challenges faced by ex-convicts after release, social stigma and lack of opportunities. Many among them are primary earners supporting families and children, making rehabilitation crucial for their future.

As part of the programme, police identified 25 beneficiaries and extended counselling and financial assistance with the support of banks, NGOs and psychologists. Of them, 16 were helped to start small businesses, while nine were provided autorickshaws for self-employment.

Commissioner of Police Shankhabrata Bagchi said the objective was to ensure that those who had served their sentence were able to lead a dignified life. “Many tend to relapse due to lack of guidance and opportunities. Our aim is to help them live normally with their families and stay away from crime,” he said.

He expressed hope that the success of the initiative would encourage more former offenders to come forward and seek rehabilitation. He added that with continued support from donors, the programme could be expanded further and help reduce crime in the city.

Police said Operation Jyothirgamayee has already rehabilitated around 500 destitute persons by shifting them to shelter homes, reuniting them with their families in different parts of the country and facilitating medical treatment for those in need.

The initiative has also extended support to transgender persons by creating employment opportunities, including sanitation jobs with the municipal corporation. Some beneficiaries have also started small enterprises, including a canteen at a Women Police Station.
