City police, GVMC review AI-based traffic management project SARTHI

Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg on Wednesday jointly reviewed the progress of Project SARTHI (Systematic Augmented Radial Traffic & Hoop Induction), an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) aimed at improving traffic management in the city.

Officials from Keltron, the agency developing the system, gave a detailed presentation on the project’s features, including AI-driven traffic analytics, real-time traffic monitoring, adaptive signal management, vehicle movement analysis and traffic optimisation at major intersections.

Following the review meeting, the two commissioners inspected Maddilapalem Junction to assess traffic flow and examine the proposed implementation of AI-enabled traffic management solutions.

Garg said the project aims to reduce congestion at major junctions by optimising traffic signal timings based on real-time vehicular movement. He said the system would also facilitate priority movement for emergency vehicles, improve road safety and provide smoother, safer and more efficient travel for commuters.

The review comes as Visakhapatnam continues to witness a steady increase in vehicular traffic, prompting the civic administration to explore technology-driven solutions for traffic management.

Earlier in the day, Garg inspected the ongoing road widening and development works on the Vepagunta-Juttada and Vepagunta-Pinagadi stretches, which are part of the road connectivity project to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport. He directed officials to expedite the works and complete the remaining stretches at the earliest.
