AP positioned as key maritime gateway linking India with Russia: Lokesh
Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a strategic hub in global maritime trade and logistics, with the potential to strengthen economic connectivity between India and Russia, IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh said on Friday.
Addressing the “New Frontiers in Global Logistics and the Arctic Logistics Framework Dialogue” at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026, Lokesh said the state is well-positioned on India’s eastern seaboard to serve as a gateway to the hinterland, supported by its port-led development strategy.
He said the Arctic is increasingly shaping global trade patterns, energy security, and resource transportation. With countries such as India diversifying energy sources, expanding electronics manufacturing, and securing access to critical minerals, he noted that there is significant scope for enhanced cooperation between India and Russia.
Lokesh highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s maritime infrastructure, noting that the state has a coastline of nearly 1,000 km, six operational ports, and several others under development. Against the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainties, he stressed the need to explore alternative maritime routes and strengthen resilient supply chains.
He added that Arctic shipping corridors are gaining importance as they help reduce transit time and improve efficiency in global logistics networks.
Referring to India’s Make in India initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lokesh said India could optimise trade by importing energy resources while expanding exports of manufactured goods through emerging logistics corridors.
He further said Andhra Pradesh has attracted about 25 per cent of total investments received by India over the last two years, positioning the state as an emerging hub for manufacturing, logistics, and exports.
On the sidelines of the forum, Lokesh held discussions with senior officials of RUSAL on ongoing investments in Pioneer Aluminium Industries. RUSAL acquired a 26 per cent stake in the company in March 2025.
Pioneer Aluminium Industries, based in Andhra Pradesh, operates a 1.5 million tonnes per annum alumina refinery catering to both domestic and international markets.
