Bengali New Year Celebrations Bring Baul Music to RK Beach, Visakhapatnam
The Bengali New Year was celebrated with cultural fervour at the open-air stage of the Kali Temple near RK Beach on Saturday evening, where a soulful Baul music performance emerged as the highlight of the festivities, drawing an appreciative audience.
The programme was organised by Sudipta Banerjee, who is associated with the temple, in collaboration with members of “Amra Kojon,” a cultural group that actively promotes Bengali art forms. The evening featured a mix of traditional music and dance performances, reflecting the depth and diversity of Bengal’s cultural heritage.
The main attraction of the event was a Baul performance by Ektara Somprodai from Bolpur, Santiniketan. The organisers said this was the first Baul presentation of its kind in Visakhapatnam, making it a special cultural moment for the city. The troupe, known for preserving the Baul folk tradition, included Gaurab Majumder, Prosanto Haldar, Santonu Bhattacharya, Shyamal Chakraborty, and Bachhu Sarkar. Their performance, rooted in spiritual folk philosophy and simple instrumentation, captivated the audience throughout the evening.
Several attendees described the event as a refreshing cultural experience that brought a slice of rural Bengal’s musical heritage to the coastal city. The Baul songs, often centred on themes of love, humanity, and universal harmony, resonated strongly with the gathering.
Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police Shankha Brata Bagchi attended the programme as the chief guest. He appreciated the initiative and acknowledged the role of cultural events in promoting harmony and community bonding in the city.
The evening concluded on a reflective note, with organisers and participants conveying a message of unity, peace, and sustainability, in keeping with the spirit of the Bengali New Year celebrations.
