Bhogapuram Airport Marks Dream Come True

For GMR Group chairman Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, the inauguration of the Bhogapuram International Airport on Saturday was more than the commissioning of a major infrastructure project. It marked the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream of bringing a world-class airport to his native district of Vizianagaram.

A native of Rajam in Vizianagaram district, Rao appeared visibly emotional and jubilant during the inauguration ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, he said the airport’s completion in his home district was a matter of immense pride and satisfaction.

Rao said the Bhogapuram International Airport had been completed six months ahead of its scheduled December deadline, reflecting the GMR Group’s emphasis on timely delivery of major infrastructure projects.

Expressing confidence in the airport’s potential, Rao said it would transform the economic landscape of north Andhra, much like the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad accelerated Hyderabad’s growth. He said the new airport would attract investments, boost tourism, improve connectivity and generate employment opportunities across the region.

“I am delighted that a world-class airport has come up in my native district. It will serve as a catalyst for economic development and create new opportunities for the people of the region,” Rao said.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for their support in facilitating the speedy execution of the project, which enabled its completion ahead of schedule.

The GMR Group is one of the country’s leading airport infrastructure developers and currently operates major airports, including those in New Delhi and Hyderabad, besides managing airport infrastructure at several other locations across India.
