Deaths of Two Women in Vizag Raise Questions Over Police Probe
Concerns have been raised over police investigation standards following two recent deaths of young women in the city, with allegations of foul play and demands for a deeper probe gathering momentum.
In one case, Monika was allegedly murdered by Navy employee Ravindra after he took her to a friend’s house. In another incident, Shanti Kumari, also known as Jessie, of Jodugullapalem, was found dead after she reportedly left home saying that she was attending a party.
The handling of both cases has drawn criticism from the public and the victims’ families. In Monika’s case, police are said to have relied largely on statements made by the accused. A similar approach is now being questioned in Jessie’s case as well.
Jessie’s sister and a close friend, who is a nurse, have alleged that she was murdered. “She had injuries all over her body, cuts on her hands, and marks on her neck. How can this be termed suicide?” they questioned.
Police, however, maintained that the death was a case of suicide. Five young men and one woman have been arrested in connection with the incident and remanded to judicial custody. Authorities have so far disclosed only the names of the accused, a move that has also come under scrutiny.
According to investigators, Jessie was allegedly assaulted after she reportedly spread information about a boy and a girl in the group being in a relationship. However, the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear. “There are still many unanswered questions. A thorough and impartial investigation is needed,” residents said.
