Irregularities Alleged in City Rythu Bazaars
Allegations of irregularities, favouritism, and unofficial collections in several Rythu Bazaars across the city have triggered demands for intervention by senior district authorities.
Sources in the Agricultural Marketing Department alleged that disciplinary action was being enforced selectively. “Strict action is being taken against some employees, while others facing serious allegations are allegedly being spared,” a source said. The issue is said to have led to internal disputes and complaints being submitted to public representatives.
The matter first came to light after reports emerged regarding the construction of an unauthorised stall at the Pedawaltair Rythu Bazaar. Following media reports, the Estate Officer concerned was suspended. However, officials familiar with the developments alleged that the construction had initially received approval from higher authorities. “Action was initiated only after the issue came into the public domain,” a source claimed.
Subsequently, complaints were reportedly submitted to North constituency MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju, alleging that an attendant at the Narasimhanagar Rythu Bazaar had been collecting money unofficially from vendors. The MLA is learnt to have written to the Collector and Joint Collector seeking action after verification of the allegations.
Though departmental officials reportedly conducted an inquiry, no disciplinary action was initiated against the attendant. Instead, he was transferred to Pendurthi, allegedly at his own request. “Despite the transfer orders, both attendants continued in their respective positions for several months without the changes being implemented,” sources alleged.
Questions have also been raised over recent transfers of attendants. “Employees facing complaints are being posted to locations of their choice, whereas disciplinary transfers are generally expected to place staff away from the city,” another source alleged.
Further allegations have surfaced that the attendant’s family members were operating stalls at different Rythu Bazaars. Sources claimed that one family member was engaged in vegetable sales, while another was selling lemons. It was also alleged that the attendant had earlier sold lemons outside a Rythu Bazaar before securing employment in the department.
The attendant is also learnt to be facing a harassment case registered at the Pendurthi police station based on a complaint filed by a woman farmer. Allegations have additionally been made that vendor cards intended for genuine farmers were being issued to ineligible persons. “An independent inquiry is necessary to ensure transparency in the functioning of Rythu Bazaars,” sources said.
