Pawan Kalyan Questions Safety Lapses After VSP Blast

A day after the devastating blast at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) claimed eight lives and injured several workers, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday sought accountability for what he described as serious lapses in industrial safety and management practices.

Visiting the injured workers at KIMS Hospital in Sheelanagar, Mr Pawan Kalyan enquired about their condition and reviewed the treatment being provided. During his interaction with the workers, he was informed that a minor incident had reportedly occurred near the accident site the previous night. However, as no workers were present in the area at the time, it went unnoticed.

Addressing the media later, the Deputy Chief Minister questioned whether safety protocols at the steel plant were being implemented effectively.

“An accident of this magnitude raises several troubling questions. Were safety systems functioning properly? Were adequate precautions in place? Were workers operating under excessive pressure?” he asked.

Calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the plant’s infrastructure and safety mechanisms, Mr Pawan Kalyan said the tragedy could not be dismissed as an isolated incident. He stressed that, although VSP is a government-run enterprise, its management must be held accountable for ensuring a safe working environment.

He also expressed concern over the long-pending issue of captive mines for the steel plant, stating that delays in addressing critical operational requirements had affected its growth and efficiency.

The Deputy Chief Minister said he would hold detailed discussions with workers, trade unions and other stakeholders once the injured employees recovered, to gain first-hand insights into workplace conditions and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.

Observing that industrial accidents continue to occur with disturbing regularity in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli districts, he described the trend as “deeply alarming” and questioned whether industries were conducting rigorous safety audits and adhering to established safety norms.

“Every industrial accident is a warning. We cannot wait for tragedies to repeat themselves before taking corrective action,” he said, calling for a long-term strategy to strengthen workplace safety across industries.

Mr Pawan Kalyan also announced that a three-member committee from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) would visit Visakhapatnam to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the blast. The committee will investigate the circumstances leading to the accident, examine compliance with safety protocols and assess the effectiveness of the rescue and emergency response measures.

“This is not merely an emotional issue arising from the loss of lives. It is a matter of accountability, responsibility and systemic failure that must be thoroughly examined,” he said.

Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar, Social Welfare Minister Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, MLA Vamsi Krishna Srinivas and District Collector Abhishikt Kishore accompanied the Deputy Chief Minister during the hospital visit.
