South Coastal Railway Zone notification welcomed in North Andhra

The Gazette Notification for the formation of the South Coastal Railway Zone, with June 1, 2026, declared as the effective date by Union Minister for Railways, Electronics & IT, and Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday, has been widely welcomed across North Andhra, especially in Visakhapatnam.

The decision is being seen as a long-pending administrative reform aimed at improving efficiency, decentralising railway operations, and strengthening connectivity in a region that has seen rapid industrial and urban growth. The demand for a separate railway zone has been under discussion for several years and has been consistently raised by public representatives, industry bodies, and civil society organisations.

The process leading to the notification, however, involved delays and procedural challenges. Stakeholders point to multiple rounds of representations and consultations over the years, highlighting operational limitations under the existing zonal system and the need for quicker decision-making to meet rising freight and passenger traffic.

A senior transport policy expert said the move reflects both long-standing demand and administrative need. “A dedicated railway zone is the outcome of sustained advocacy and the requirement for decentralised governance in a fast-growing railway corridor,” the expert noted.

Industry representatives in Visakhapatnam have described the development as a strong positive for logistics and industrial activity. A logistics expert said, “Better administrative control will help reduce freight delays, improve coordination with port operations, and support sectors such as steel, petrochemicals, and manufacturing that rely heavily on rail connectivity.”

Experts also point to wider economic and social gains. A public policy researcher observed that new railway zones typically support faster project execution, improved fund use, and more region-focused planning. This can further encourage industrial growth, expand warehousing facilities, and attract private investment.

On the social side, improved rail connectivity is expected to enhance passenger movement, strengthen rural–urban links, and improve access to education, healthcare, and employment across North Andhra.

Trade bodies in Visakhapatnam have welcomed the move, saying it will strengthen the region’s role as a key port and logistics hub. Political leaders and civic groups have also described the notification as the fulfilment of a long-standing regional demand.
