Visakhapatnam police launch 100-day NDPS action plan
The Visakhapatnam Range Police have launched a 100-day special action plan to intensify action against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS). The plan also aims to improve conviction rates and expand awareness across five districts.
Inspector General of Police Gopinath Jatti reviewed the enforcement strategy on Friday. He held a video conference with Superintendents of Police from Alluri Sitarama Raju, Anakapalle, Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Vizianagaram districts.
The plan rests on three pillars: Determination 2.0, Awareness 2.0, and Progress 2.0. These focus on enforcement, public outreach, and rehabilitation.
The IGP said the police will intensify action against drug traffickers. He added that financial networks linked to narcotics will also be targeted. “We will focus on property seizure in ganja cases and strict PIT NDPS implementation,” he said.
So far, officials have issued freezing and attachment orders in 19 cases against 18 accused. These cases involve assets worth ₹11.63 crore. In addition, investigators have stepped up probes into financial transactions in other commercial quantity cases.
Under the PIT NDPS Act, police have sent proposals against 114 accused. Of them, 32 are already in jail. Meanwhile, police secured convictions in 72 cases involving 129 accused between June 2024 and April 2026.
Under the “Sankalpam” awareness programme, authorities conducted 27,527 events. As a result, they reached 18.41 lakh people. This includes 7.72 lakh students across 8,761 institutions.
In addition, officials distributed 2.2 lakh pamphlets. They also set up 388 drop boxes and formed 4,094 Eagle Clubs. The IGP said, “We aim to reach 50 lakh people through sustained awareness drives.” These drives will include LED vehicles, street plays, and social media campaigns.
Meanwhile, police are using advanced tools such as KHOJ, NIDAAN, NATGRID, and 38 drones. These tools help track cultivation and transport routes of narcotics. In particular, they focus on ganja cultivation in tribal areas. Police coordinate closely with forest officials for this effort.
The 100-day plan will roll out in five phases. These include mobilisation, enforcement, rural outreach, youth engagement, and consolidation. Moreover, authorities will strengthen surveillance along highways and coastal corridors. They will also monitor crypto-linked transactions.
The IGP said, “We will identify drug users and ensure treatment through de-addiction centres.” He added that counselling will support affected families. Finally, he announced that Sankalp Clubs will be formed in colleges. The goal is to declare 1,000 villages drug-free in the Visakhapatnam Range.
