NTPC Simhadri conducts chlorine gas leak mock drill
NTPC Simhadri conducted a multi-agency mock drill at its Stage-I Chlorination Plant to evaluate the plant’s emergency preparedness and test response mechanisms in the event of a hazardous chemical incident.
The exercise simulated a chlorine gas leak from a tanker during routine maintenance operations. Upon activation of the emergency alarm, response teams were swiftly mobilised to contain the leak, rescue and evacuate affected personnel, and limit the overall impact.
The drill drew participation from several departments within NTPC Simhadri — including Operations, Chemistry, Maintenance, Safety, Human Resources and Administration alongside external agencies such as the CISF Fire Wing, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Township Hospital and Ambulance Services.

During the exercise, teams operated chlorine scrubber and sprinkler systems, deployed water curtains, isolated the affected zone, conducted atmospheric monitoring and executed rescue, evacuation and leak-arrest operations.
NTPC officials said the drill underscored the importance of inter-agency coordination and validated the plant’s operational readiness in handling chemical emergencies. All emergency response systems functioned as planned, and rescue and mitigation measures were executed safely.
A debriefing session followed the exercise, during which teams reviewed their response and identified areas for improvement. Officials said the drill reaffirmed the plant’s commitment to maintaining high standards of industrial safety and emergency preparedness.
