Simhachalam Devasthanam allows minor repairs in Panchagramalu, bans new construction

The Simhachalam Devasthanam has decided to allow minor repairs to existing houses in the five villages collectively known as Panchagramalu. The villages form part of the disputed lands of the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple. As a result, residents who have struggled to maintain their homes during the prolonged legal dispute are expected to benefit from the decision.

For several years, villagers have faced considerable hardship, particularly during the monsoon season. Moreover, many ageing houses across the villages have deteriorated steadily, exposing families to recurring weather-related risks. Before 2019, residents reportedly carried out repair works without formal approval during the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government’s tenure. Subsequently, the YSRCP government allowed repairs on the basis of recommendation letters issued by local MLAs.

To bring greater clarity to the process, the Devasthanam has now issued detailed guidelines for granting permission to repair on temple lands. Under the new norms, authorities will allow only minor repairs to existing structures. However, they will not permit new constructions, extensions, additional floors, structural changes, or alterations that modify the original design of a building.

Meanwhile, residents seeking permission must submit applications to the Land Grievance Cell established by the temple administration. The cell functions at the TTD Choultry and accepts applications between 10.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on working days. In addition, applicants must furnish photographs showing the current condition of the house, house tax receipts, electricity bills, and a copy of their Aadhaar card along with the prescribed application form.

After receiving an application, a committee comprising technical and non-technical officials will inspect the property within seven to ten days. Thereafter, the committee will verify the documents and assess the structure on site before taking a final decision on the request.

Simhachalam Devasthanam Executive Officer Jallepalli Venkata Rao said beneficiaries must strictly follow the conditions attached to the permission. He further warned that authorities would take immediate action against anyone who uses repair permission as a pretext for new construction, additional rooms, extra floors, or permanent structures. Consequently, officials will remove all unauthorised constructions found to violate the guidelines.
