Students urged to develop hobbies to stay away from drugs
Students should cultivate hobbies as a protective measure against the lure of narcotic substances, said IRS officer Edara Ravi Kiran on Wednesday.
He was speaking at an awareness programme on narcotic drugs held at Government Polytechnic College, Kancharapalem, jointly organised by the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) and the Department of Youth Services (SETVIS), Government of Andhra Pradesh, in connection with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26).
Mr. Ravi Kiran stressed the need for students to develop a questioning attitude and critical thinking skills. He cautioned them against the normalisation of substance abuse through media content and prevailing social trends, and advised them to remain vigilant. He also said that engaging in hobbies and acquiring skills would help students build a constructive future.
Ms. M. Ramya, Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Services Department and SETVIS, expressed concern over the increasing instances of drug abuse among students, noting that many young lives were being adversely affected.
NACIN Assistant Director K.R.S. Shankar explained the types of narcotic drugs, their distribution patterns, legal consequences, and helpline support services. He also interacted with students and responded to their queries.
College Principal K. Sujatha and Head of Student Affairs S.V. Ramana were present.
