LVPEI launches vision screening drive in city schools
The GMR Varalakshmi Campus of the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has launched a comprehensive vision screening programme across schools in the city to detect eye disorders among children at an early stage and ensure timely treatment, to improve both eye health and academic performance.
As part of the initiative, trained eye care professionals visited schools to screen students for common eye conditions, including refractive errors, myopia (short-sightedness), amblyopia (lazy eye), squint, and other ocular disorders. Children identified with vision problems were referred for comprehensive eye examinations, including cycloplegic refraction wherever required, to accurately assess their visual needs.
Students diagnosed with refractive errors were prescribed spectacles, while those with other eye conditions were referred to ophthalmologists for further evaluation and appropriate treatment.
Consultant Optometrist at the GMR Varalakshmi Campus, G. Abhishek, said early detection and correction of refractive errors play a vital role in a child’s overall development.
“Children with clear vision can participate more actively in classroom learning, concentrate better, and achieve improved educational outcomes. Regular vision screening helps identify eye problems before they begin to affect a child’s academic performance and overall quality of life,” he said.
Alongside the screening programme, the LVPEI team conducted awareness sessions for teachers and parents on maintaining children’s eye health. They emphasised the importance of encouraging outdoor activities, limiting unnecessary recreational screen time, and ensuring timely, comprehensive eye examinations whenever a child experiences difficulty in seeing.
The institute said the initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to reduce avoidable visual impairment among schoolchildren by promoting early detection, timely intervention, and greater awareness of eye health among parents and educators.
