AIDWA, CITU protest beach liquor sales plan in Visakhapatnam

Members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), along with activists of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and several women’s organisations, staged a protest on Saturday demanding that the Andhra Pradesh government withdraw its decision to permit beach shacks and liquor sales along the Visakhapatnam coast.

AIDWA Visakhapatnam district president R.N. Madhavi termed the move “anti-women”, alleging that it would change the character of the beaches by turning them into alcohol-centric spaces rather than family-friendly public areas. She said easier access to liquor would encourage consumption among youth and worsen social problems linked to alcohol abuse.

Citing a rise in crimes, domestic violence, sexual assaults and road accidents associated with alcohol consumption in the State, she alleged that instead of regulating liquor availability, the government was expanding access and encouraging addiction.

CITU leader P. Mani questioned whether women, students and families would feel safe visiting Visakhapatnam beach if liquor sales were permitted from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. as proposed. The leaders said tourism development should not come at the cost of public safety or women’s access to public spaces.

The protesters also criticised local elected representatives for remaining silent on the issue and accused the ruling party of adopting a contradictory stance on alcohol policy.

Several members of the public who were present at the beach also voiced concern over the proposal. “We come here with our families to spend peaceful evenings. If liquor is allowed, the atmosphere will completely change,” said a resident. Another visitor said, “The beach should remain a safe space for everyone, especially women and children. This decision is not acceptable.”
