Bhogapuram airport project advances after successful validation flight
The Bhogapuram Greenfield International Airport, officially named Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, being developed by the GMR Group in the Vizianagaram district, has reached a key milestone with the successful completion of a validation flight, moving the project closer to phased commissioning.
Located around 45 km from Visakhapatnam, the airport is among Andhra Pradesh’s most significant infrastructure projects aimed at improving air connectivity in North Andhra Pradesh and easing pressure on the existing Visakhapatnam airport. The project was launched in 2023 following the foundation stone ceremony.
Officials said the validation flight tested critical operational systems, including runway performance, air traffic navigation, communication systems, and emergency response readiness. The exercise is considered an important step towards securing regulatory approvals before the start of commercial operations.
A senior official associated with the project said the validation process ensures that all integrated systems meet operational standards and are fully ready for passenger services.
Spanning more than 2,200 acres, the airport is being developed as a full-scale aviation hub featuring passenger terminals, cargo facilities, maintenance infrastructure, and multimodal connectivity links. Once operational, it is expected to gradually take over international operations from Visakhapatnam airport while strengthening domestic connectivity in the region.
The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with an initial capacity of around six million passengers annually. It will be expanded to 12 million in the second phase, 18 million in the third phase, and about 24 million passengers per year at full development. Dedicated cargo infrastructure is also planned to support export-oriented industries.

Aviation experts say the phased development model reflects a broader infrastructure strategy in which capacity is aligned with demand growth to ensure efficiency and avoid underutilisation in early stages.
The facility is expected to support wide-body aircraft operations, advanced Instrument Landing Systems, night landing capability, and future international connectivity, positioning it as a major aviation node in eastern India.
Speaking exclusively to The Coastal Times, Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu has said the project will significantly enhance air connectivity for North Andhra Pradesh and act as a catalyst for regional growth. He has stated that such infrastructure will improve accessibility, reduce travel time, and open new economic opportunities for businesses and passengers in the region.
He has also noted that the airport aligns with the national vision of expanding aviation infrastructure beyond metro cities into emerging growth corridors, helping promote balanced regional development.
Officials said the airport’s coastal location gives it strategic importance due to proximity to Southeast Asian air routes and maritime trade corridors in the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to serve North Andhra Pradesh, southern Odisha, and surrounding industrial regions, complementing the Visakhapatnam–Chennai economic corridor.
Economists and industry representatives expect the project to benefit sectors such as pharmaceuticals, seafood exports, agriculture, textiles, and logistics by improving cargo movement and market access.
Infrastructure experts note that airports increasingly function as economic growth engines, supporting investment, employment generation, and urban expansion around major hubs.
The project comes amid strong growth in India’s aviation sector, driven by rising passenger demand, tourism, and business travel. With metro airports operating near peak capacity, additional infrastructure in emerging regions is seen as essential.
Urban planners expect Bhogapuram airport to become a key anchor for development in North Andhra Pradesh, supporting residential, industrial, and logistics growth. Once fully operational, it is expected to emerge as a major aviation and logistics hub in eastern India, driving long-term regional transformation.
