Buddha sculpture with six elephants unveiled at VIMS
Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) Director Dr Rambabu on Saturday unveiled a striking sculpture of Lord Buddha surrounded by six elephants, installed on the institute premises, adding a distinctive artistic and spiritual landmark to the campus.
The sculpture, designed by noted sculptor Chaudhari Sandhya Patnaik, reflects the values of peace, wisdom, and compassion associated with Lord Buddha. The six elephants symbolise strength, dignity, and harmony, which complement the central figure and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rambabu said the installation was aimed at creating a serene and inspiring environment for patients, attendants, students and healthcare professionals.
“Healthcare institutions are not merely places for treatment. A peaceful and positive atmosphere plays a vital role in healing and well-being. The Buddha sculpture will serve as a symbol of hope, compassion and inner strength for everyone visiting the campus,” he said.
Dr Rambabu praised Ms Patnaik’s contribution and said the artwork would become a landmark feature of VIMS.
Chaudhari Sandhya Patnaik, an alumna of the Department of Fine Arts at Andhra University, said the sculpture was conceived to blend art with human values.
“Lord Buddha’s message of peace and mindfulness remains relevant across generations. Through this sculpture, we wanted to create a space that encourages reflection and tranquillity amid the busy atmosphere of a healthcare institution,” she said.
Ms Patnaik is a well-known sculptor and artist who has created several acclaimed public artworks across Visakhapatnam. She has also served as a judge for The Hindu’s painting competitions on several occasions and is widely recognised for promoting art and culture in the region.
Faculty members, students and staff of VIMS appreciated the installation, describing it as a meaningful addition that enriches the institution’s cultural and aesthetic landscape.
