Friendship Day Outing Ends in Tragedy
A Friendship Day outing turned tragic after two youths went missing when they were swept away by strong waves at Old Gangavaram Beach under the limits of the New Port police station in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
According to the police, a group of seven friends, including four members of the same family, had visited the beach. While one of them was filming the group, the remaining six climbed onto the popular ‘Suswagatham’ Rock, named after the Telugu film Suswagatham, starring Pawan Kalyan, parts of which were filmed at the location.
As they posed for photographs, a powerful wave crashed against the rock, sweeping a 19-year-old woman into the sea. A 25-year-old man, reportedly her friend, jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue her but was also carried away by the strong currents. Both remained missing.
The remaining members of the group immediately alerted the police. Personnel from the New Port police station rushed to the spot and launched a search and rescue operation with the assistance of rescue teams.
Search operations were still underway at the time of filing this report.
