Parawada landfill land notified, 2005 allocation revised

The State government has issued orders notifying land for landfill operations in Ramky Pharma City, Parawada, while also de-notifying a portion of land allocated in 2005 to enable its use for other purposes.

According to the orders issued on Friday, 50 acres have been allotted in Tadi village after the coalition government came to power for the disposal of industrial waste generated by pharma units. Of this, 10 acres are currently under litigation, and only the remaining 40 acres have been notified for landfill use.

The government also revisited an earlier allocation made in 2005, when 105 acres were set aside for the same purpose, and 91.44 acres were notified for landfill operations. However, following incidents of contamination and seepage of polluted water that affected surrounding lands, locals raised objections. The Pollution Control Board subsequently directed that waste dumping be stopped at the site and shifted elsewhere.

Since then, Ramky management has been transporting waste collected from Parawada to Nellore for disposal, leading to a sharp rise in costs. While earlier landfill expenses were about ₹10,000 per tonne, they have now increased to over ₹1 lakh per tonne, with the burden being passed on to pharma companies, which have expressed concern over rising costs.

In view of these developments, the government has de-notified 91.44 acres of the earlier allotted land to allow its use for alternative purposes. With this revision, a total of 105 acres is now available, and Coastal Waste Management Company has been granted permission to utilise 8.96 acres for operations.
