SuTa founders champion sustainable saris at Visakhapatnam event

At a time when sustainable fashion and handloom revival are gaining national attention, the founders of popular fashion label SuTa said every sari carries a story of craft, community, and culture, and that understanding its journey helps women build a deeper connection with what they wear.

SuTa founders Sujata Biswas and Tanya Biswas, popularly known as the SuTa sisters, were speaking at a day-long exhibition-cum-interactive session organised by FICCI FLO Vijayawada in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

The event was inaugurated by Priya Bhalla, president of the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA), Eastern Region, in the presence of FICCI FLO Vijayawada chairperson Supriya Mallineni, senior vice-chairperson Hema Yadavalli, and executive committee members.

The exhibition showcased a curated range of functional saris, marking the brand’s first presentation in Visakhapatnam.

Interacting with participants, the founders recalled their personal association with the city, where they lived between 2008 and 2011 while their father was employed with the Railways.

After leaving their corporate careers, the sisters launched SuTa a decade ago with a focus on handcrafted and sustainable saris, blouses, and related apparel, drawing inspiration from the artistry of weavers in West Bengal.

Speaking on the brand’s journey, Sujata Biswas said the venture began with a simple desire to create a meaningful impact. “We followed conventional career paths, but kept asking ourselves what truly mattered to us. That is how we ventured into SuTa,” she said.

Tanya Biswas said the brand’s growth was never measured only in numbers. “We wanted to make saris accessible and aspirational again, something young women choose for themselves, style in their own way, and take pride in owning,” she said.

She added that one of the key lessons for women entrepreneurs was to let go of guilt and seek support. “Growth begins when you start building systems and asking for help that enable you to move forward,” she said.
