TDP to launch bicycle campaign on World Environment Day
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will launch a statewide bicycle campaign on World Environment Day on June 5 to promote environmental awareness and encourage reduced fuel consumption, party State president Palla Srinivasa Rao said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Mangalagiri, Srinivasa Rao said the initiative aims to convey that environmental protection is a collective responsibility requiring active public participation.
As part of the programme, Chief Minister and TDP national president N. Chandrababu Naidu will ride a bicycle from the helipad to his place of stay in Visakhapatnam on Friday. Srinivasa Rao urged party leaders, cadres and supporters across the State to participate in the campaign in large numbers.
He said the world is grappling with climate change, rising pollution and shrinking green cover, adding that these challenges demand coordinated action from governments and citizens alike.
Environmental protection, he said, cannot be left to governments alone. Citizens must also take ownership, and the bicycle campaign is intended to reinforce this message.
Highlighting the benefits of cycling, Srinivasa Rao said it can help reduce pollution, lower fuel consumption and improve public health. He added that even small individual actions can collectively create a significant environmental impact.
He urged party representatives and workers to use bicycles for their engagements on Friday as a symbolic gesture of support for environmental conservation.
Referring to global energy concerns linked to tensions in West Asia, he said the situation underlines the importance of reducing dependence on fossil fuels. He also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “My Nation, My Responsibility” appeal, urging people to use fuel judiciously.
Vehicle emissions remain a major source of air pollution and health issues, he said, adding that a shift towards non-motorised transport would benefit both public health and the environment.
Srinivasa Rao also referred to the party’s recent Mahanadu, held in a hybrid format, which enabled the participation of over 24 lakh workers through digital platforms while reducing travel-related fuel consumption.
Calling for wider participation, he urged citizens and party workers to adopt environmentally responsible practices and support the bicycle campaign as a step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
