VMRDA proposes Singapore-style eco-tourism corridor in Visakhapatnam
The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) is planning an integrated eco-tourism corridor linking Kailasagiri, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, and the Kambalakonda Reserved Forest, modelled on Singapore’s Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
The project proposes a range of nature-based attractions, including a night safari, jungle safari, rainforest-themed experiences, and a large aquarium showcasing aquatic species. Officials said the initiative aims to bring tourism, wildlife conservation, and environmental sustainability under a single integrated framework.
According to officials, the project is expected to strengthen Visakhapatnam’s eco-tourism potential while generating employment and supporting tourism-linked economic activity. It also seeks to promote sustainable tourism practices in the region.
The proposal has entered the planning stage following the engagement of a consortium comprising Bengaluru-based Integrated Design and Singapore’s Mandai Global Private Limited. Representatives of the consortium recently visited the proposed sites for preliminary assessments.
Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority Chairperson M.V. Pranav Gopal said, “The proposed eco-tourism corridor is envisioned as a model that integrates nature, wildlife conservation, and responsible tourism while positioning Visakhapatnam as a premier eco-tourism destination in the region.”
VMRDA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the consortium for the design and implementation of the project. Officials said the planning process has gained momentum after earlier delays in the tendering process.
The project is expected to prioritise wildlife conservation while developing eco-tourism facilities across the identified zones.
However, the estimated project cost of ₹4.45 crore has drawn criticism in some quarters, with concerns raised over the level of expenditure.
Visakhapatnam, already known for its coastal tourism and expanding infrastructure, is seeking to diversify its tourism portfolio through the proposed corridor. If implemented, the project is expected to enhance the city’s tourism profile and attract domestic and international visitors.
