AP issues high alert for coast as Bay depression likely to intensify

The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday issued a high alert for coastal districts after a depression over the Bay of Bengal was forecast to intensify into a severe depression, prompting authorities to strengthen precautionary measures along the coastline.

Reviewing the weather situation, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu said protecting the lives of fishermen remained the government’s highest priority. He appealed to fishermen, particularly those along the north Andhra coast, not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve and the advisory is withdrawn.

“Fishermen should remain ashore and cooperate with the administration until the weather situation returns to normal. Their safety is of utmost importance,” Mr Atchannaidu said.

The Fisheries Department has advised fishermen against venturing into rough seas until further notice. Boat owners and operators have also been directed to ensure that transponders and onboard communication equipment are in working condition before undertaking any authorised movement at sea.

Residents of low-lying and vulnerable coastal areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by district authorities and disaster management officials.

The State government has activated its disaster preparedness mechanism and instructed officials in coastal districts to remain on high alert as the weather system continues to evolve. Preventive measures have been put in place to minimise risks and ensure public safety as the system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen over the next 24 hours.
