NITI Aayog member hails AMTZ as MedTech model
In a strong endorsement of India’s growing medical technology capabilities, NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr M. Srinivas on Monday described the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) as one of the country’s most advanced and comprehensive MedTech ecosystems, saying its successful model has the potential to be replicated across India to accelerate the sector’s growth.
Leading a high-level NITI Aayog delegation, Dr Srinivas visited the sprawling AMTZ campus to assess its integrated ecosystem spanning medical device manufacturing, research and development, diagnostics, testing, startup incubation, innovation and commercialisation. The visit focused on evaluating how the facility is driving indigenous medical technology and strengthening India’s self-reliance in healthcare manufacturing.
The delegation was welcomed by AMTZ Managing Director and Founder CEO Dr Jitendra Sharma, who outlined the organisation’s mission to transform India into a global hub for medical technology innovation. He explained how AMTZ has built a collaborative ecosystem that brings together researchers, clinicians, manufacturers, startups and industry partners under one roof, enabling faster development and commercialisation of cutting-edge medical technologies.
During an extensive tour of the campus, the delegation visited key innovation centres, including MediValley, BioValley, the Bharat Limb Centre and the Centre of Excellence. Startup founders showcased a range of indigenous medical devices and healthcare technologies while sharing their experiences and challenges in areas such as regulatory approvals, manufacturing scale-up and market access.
AMTZ officials highlighted the institution’s unique support ecosystem, which includes world-class shared manufacturing infrastructure, advanced testing laboratories, regulatory guidance, certification support and strategic industry collaborations that significantly reduce the barriers for MedTech entrepreneurs.
The delegation also interacted with representatives of the World Health Innovation Forum and reviewed the initiatives of Universal BioMed Cross, which is working in the areas of biomedical emergency response, capacity building and global health outreach.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sharma said AMTZ was established on the belief that breakthrough innovation is possible only when researchers, clinicians and manufacturers work in close collaboration.
“Our integrated ecosystem has accelerated indigenous innovation, empowered startups and strengthened India’s position as a global destination for medical technology manufacturing,” he said.
Impressed by the scale and impact of the ecosystem, Dr Srinivas said AMTZ demonstrates what can be achieved through seamless collaboration between government, academia and industry.
He also commended Dr Sharma’s leadership in creating an ecosystem that has become a benchmark for the country’s MedTech sector, observing that the AMTZ model could serve as a blueprint for establishing similar innovation hubs across India and further advancing the nation’s healthcare technology ambitions.
