Cordelia Cruise charts a new course for Visakhapatnam’s tourism ambitions

As dusk settles into a canopy of stars over the Bay of Bengal, passengers aboard the Cordelia Cruise step into an experience that goes beyond conventional travel. Far from the noise of the city, the gentle rhythm of the sea, wide ocean views, and curated luxury amenities come together to create a journey that becomes as compelling as any destination. With the cruise’s return, Visakhapatnam is steadily strengthening its position as an emerging cruise tourism destination in India.

The cruise liner departed Chennai on Monday evening and reached Visakhapatnam on Wednesday morning after crossing the Bay of Bengal, carrying around 1,750 passengers. That same evening, a fresh batch of roughly the same number of passengers boarded for the return sailing to Chennai. Passengers described the experience as a refreshing blend of comfort and relaxation, enriched by panoramic sea views, live performances, and premium hospitality.

The resumption of services aligns with intensified efforts by the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government to position Visakhapatnam as a major cruise tourism hub. A dedicated cruise terminal at Visakhapatnam Port, built at an estimated cost of nearly ₹100 crore, has laid the groundwork for expanding cruise tourism along India’s eastern coastline. The Andhra Pradesh Tours and Travels Association is also working with the State government to attract more domestic and international operators to the city.

The return of the Cordelia Cruise marks the beginning of a phased expansion of its Visakhapatnam services. Until recently, the vessel operated only three voyages to the city each year. That number is set to rise following the CII Investors’ Summit held in Visakhapatnam earlier this year, where Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu urged the operator to expand operations to 20 voyages annually. After further discussions, the company agreed to begin the expansion in phases, starting with five voyages this year, with the present sailing being the first in that series.

Luxury at sea

Cruise fares vary by journey duration and cabin category. For the two-night Visakhapatnam–Chennai voyage, a standard cabin costs around ₹22,000 (inclusive of taxes), while a luxury suite with a private sea-facing balcony is priced up to ₹76,000.

Like airline tickets, cruise fares use a dynamic pricing model, with prices typically increasing closer to the departure date. Rates may also vary based on the booking channel — the official website or authorised travel agents.

Passengers, regardless of accommodation category, enjoy unlimited meals — both vegetarian and non-vegetarian — along with beverages, live entertainment, and a range of recreational facilities throughout the voyage.

A floating city of leisure

The MV Empress, operated by Cordelia Cruises, is India’s only premium cruise ship operating in domestic waters. Its domestic routes link Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Kolkata, while international itineraries extend to Singapore and Malaysia.

Built in 1990, the 48,563-tonne vessel features 11 decks and 796 cabins, accommodating nearly 2,000 guests. Around 750 crew members oversee operations and attend to guests throughout the voyage.

Onboard amenities include six restaurants, two bars, a casino, a two-level entertainment auditorium, a swimming pool, and a fully equipped fitness centre. Guests are served five meals a day, with dining venues open from 7 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Entertainment includes live music, dance performances, theatre, and magic shows.

Passengers can also browse onboard shops, where purchases are accepted in US dollars. The casino remains open from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., adding to the ship’s vibrant nightlife.

Tourism stakeholders believe the planned expansion will further enhance Visakhapatnam’s appeal as a maritime destination. It is also expected to create new opportunities across hospitality, transport, and allied sectors. With improved infrastructure and increasing cruise connectivity, the city is steadily charting a course towards becoming one of India’s leading cruise tourism gateways.
