GVMC to Relaunch Summer Sports Camps After Two-Year Gap

In a move aimed at encouraging school-level sporting talent, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is preparing to restart its summer sports coaching camps in the city after a gap of more than two years.

The initiative, which will be taken up in coordination with the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), was discussed at a review meeting chaired by GVMC Additional Commissioner P. Nallanayya. Representatives of city sports associations, Visakhapatnam West MLA and Government Whip P.G.V.R. Naidu, and District Sports Development Officer R. June Galiot Rodrigues attended the meeting.

Officials said the camps will offer structured coaching in 33 sports disciplines, covering athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, karate, taekwondo, volleyball, yoga, and several other events.

Nallanayya asked sports associations to provide details of available grounds, qualified coaches, and expected participation. He also sought input on the diet plan for trainees. The duration of the camps will be finalised after discussions with the GVMC Commissioner, he said.

MLA Naidu said the camps would be conducted on a larger scale this year with the objective of identifying and nurturing young sporting talent in the city.

Officials were instructed to ensure basic facilities such as drinking water and shaded rest areas at all venues, keeping in mind the summer heat.

SAAP representative Rodrigues assured full support and coordination with GVMC for the smooth conduct of the programme. Sports association members stressed the need for wider publicity to ensure higher participation this year.
