Indian Navy Reviews Offshore Security Plans

The 48th Regional Contingency Committee (East) meeting was held in Visakhapatnam on April 17 under the chairmanship of Vice Admiral Susheel Menon, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, to review security measures and contingency plans for offshore platforms located off the east coast.

The meeting, organised under the aegis of the Indian Navy, assumed significance in view of the strategic importance of offshore energy installations and the need for constant preparedness against emerging maritime challenges.

Representatives from the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, Intelligence Bureau, Directorate General of Shipping, Customs, CISF, State Police, Fisheries Department, Ports authorities, and major oil operators, including ONGC, Reliance Industries Limited, Vedanta, HEPI, HEOC, and OIL, participated in the deliberations.

The committee reviewed developments since the 47th Regional Contingency Committee (East) meeting held in Kakinada in September 2024 and assessed evolving risk scenarios concerning maritime safety, offshore infrastructure protection, disaster management, and emergency response systems.

Discussions focused on strengthening coordination among agencies, improving response mechanisms for maritime and offshore contingencies, and aligning regional contingency plans with emerging operational requirements.

Participants emphasised the importance of timely information-sharing, joint preparedness measures, and seamless cooperation among all stakeholders to deal with emergencies effectively.
