TDP’s decision to allot 33% tickets to women historic, says Anitha

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha has termed the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) decision to allot 33% of its tickets in legislative elections to women as a historic step toward advancing women’s political empowerment.

Addressing the media here on Friday, Ms. Anitha said the TDP had remained committed to women’s empowerment since its inception and had consistently worked to ensure greater participation of women in public life and governance.

She said the decision announced at the party’s Mahanaadu reflected its commitment to enabling women to emerge not only as voters but also as decision-makers and leaders.

Recalling the contributions of TDP founder and former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, Ms. Anitha said he had introduced several landmark reforms for the welfare and empowerment of women. She noted that Andhra Pradesh had become a pioneer in granting women equal rights to family property, a measure that subsequently influenced policy changes elsewhere in the country.

Mr. Rama Rao had also recognised the importance of women’s education and political participation, she said. She added that reservations for women in local bodies had paved the way for thousands of women to enter public life as elected representatives.

Ms. Anitha said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had further strengthened women’s economic empowerment through initiatives such as the DWCRA self-help groups movement, which helped rural women achieve financial independence and self-confidence.

She observed that the DWCRA model’s enduring relevance was evident in its continuation under successive governments. The government’s objective, she said, was to encourage women to move beyond seeking employment and become entrepreneurs capable of creating jobs for others.

Referring to the resolution adopted at the Mahanaadu, Ms. Anitha said the proposed 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies would provide greater opportunities for women to participate in policymaking and governance.

Given adequate opportunities and encouragement, women have demonstrated their capabilities across politics, administration, education and business, she said.

The Home Minister described Mahanaadu as more than a political event, saying it symbolised the aspirations and emotional connection of party workers. The strong turnout of women despite the summer heat reflected their confidence in the party, she added.

Ms. Anitha said the TDP would continue to work for the dignity, safety, economic advancement and political representation of women.
