Zoo Summer Camp to Promote Conservation Awareness

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is set to host a five-day summer camp for children later this month, offering young participants an introduction to wildlife conservation, biodiversity and animal care through interactive activities and expert-led sessions.

The programme, scheduled from 19 to 23 May at the Zoo Bioscope inside the zoo premises, is open to children aged between four and 12. Sessions will run daily from 3pm to 5pm.

Organised in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and WCTRE, the camp aims to encourage environmental awareness among children at a time when climate-related concerns and habitat loss continue to affect wildlife across the region.

According to organisers, the programme will include birdwatching, butterfly observation sessions, backyard gardening, animal charades, mask-making workshops and a “Little Zoo Vet” activity designed to familiarise children with animal health and welfare. Conservation biologists, veterinarians and environmental specialists are expected to lead several of the sessions.

The camp will also address broader environmental themes, including heatwave precautions for both animals and humans, zoo animal diets and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

Participation has been capped due to limited seating. The registration fee is ₹1,000, with attendees receiving themed T-shirts, caps, study materials, zoo passport cards and certificates of participation.
