GITAM launches study on Carnatic music for hypertension

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences at GITAM Deemed to be University has launched a research project to explore the role of Carnatic music-based meditation in managing hypertension.

Titled “Carnatic Raga Facilitated Meditation for Hypertension Management,” the study is supported by an NSG Project grant and will examine the therapeutic effects of selected Carnatic ragas combined with guided meditation practices.

The project is led by Dr. Bhavaraju Lakshmi Surya Teja of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. It draws on the principles of Nāda Yoga and Raga Chikitsa, which regard sound and melody as tools for healing.

Hypertension, a major lifestyle-related condition, is closely linked to chronic stress. The study will assess whether structured musical interventions can help regulate psycho-physiological responses, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and reduce stress markers associated with elevated blood pressure.

The project will also evaluate changes in emotional and psychological well-being alongside clinical parameters.

Research interns are being invited from disciplines such as music, fine arts, psychology, social sciences, and health sciences. Walk-in interviews will be held on campus.

For details, candidates may contact the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at GITAM or Dr. Lakshmi Surya Teja at 9440658033 or lbhavara@gitam.edu.
