Bhogapuram Airport Faces Connectivity Challenge

Bhogapuram Airport Faces Connectivity Challenge

With Bhogapuram International Airport set to open in the coming months, attention has shifted to the need for strong transport links to ensure convenient access for passengers, businesses, and cargo operators. Located around 46 km from Visakhapatnam city, the new airport is expected to become the region’s main aviation hub.

The airport is likely to be operational by the end of June or in July. While the project is seen as a major boost to regional development, travellers and industry representatives have stressed that better road, rail, and public transport facilities must be in place before the launch.

At present, the existing airport in Visakhapatnam is around 8 km from the city. In comparison, airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad are located much closer to their city centres.

The issue gains importance in view of the rapid industrial growth in the Anakapalli district. Large investments are being made in projects such as the ArcelorMittal steel plant, NTPC Green Hydrogen Hub, and several pharmaceutical companies. For commuters and cargo operators from these industrial areas, reaching Bhogapuram airport will involve a longer journey.

The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) had initially proposed 20 roads to improve airport connectivity. The number was later reduced to 15, then seven, and officials now say only four roads are likely to be completed before operations begin.

APSRTC has announced plans to run electric bus services to the airport. However, passengers have also sought faster and direct transport options from key parts of the city.

The Andhra Pradesh Air Passengers Association has suggested setting up passenger lounges at locations such as RK Beach, VUDA Park, Seethammadhara, and other major centres. These lounges should offer seating, food outlets, ATM facilities, and medical stores, it said.

The association has also called for the extension of the proposed metro rail corridor from Kommadi to Bhogapuram, early execution of the Coastal Corridor project, and the construction of a dedicated cargo terminal for goods currently moved by road to Hyderabad and Chennai airports.

Representatives of the association, including Kumar Raja, Naresh Kumar, and D.S. Varma, have submitted their proposals to the Visakhapatnam MP, seeking early action.
